I Know I’m Late But… Friends Season 6

I have a sickness. It’s midterm season yet I cannot focus on anything until I finish Friends. This is all I think of. I live, eat, sleep, and think Friends.

Season 6 was a good one. They’re all good, but I particularly enjoyed this one.

The season opens in a bit of a haze. Just as season 5 ended, we see Monica and Chandler at the chapel in Las Vegas…but out runs Rachel and Ross, just having drunkenly gotten married.

The next morning, they don’t remember getting married but instantly agree to get an annulment. Unfortunately, as I expected, this wouldn’t be so easy. Of course, Ross being Ross, decided it was a good idea to stay married to Rachel even after telling her that he already took care of it (half ’cause he doesn’t wanna be “3 divorce guy” and half cause he looooooves Rachel). Eventually, they end up getting the divorce, but only after more over the top shenanigans from Ross. Seriously, what is up with that guy sometimes?

I just need a breather from all this Ross business for a little bit…

Early in the season, the other Geller sibling (Monica) and her boyfriend (Chandler) decide to take the next step in their relationship by moving in together. Rachel spends some time wondering where to live, luckily dodges the Ross bullet and moves in with Phoebe. At first I was wishing she had moved in with Joey but it is nice to see a world beyond the Joey/Chandler/Monica/occasionally Rachel building. This is only temporary, though, as the fire at Phoebe and Rachel’s place puts them all back under the same roof again.

I do sort of wish Rachel had just moved in with Joey because we could have been spared the whole Australian dancer sub-plot. I do like when Joey has a genuine interest in a girl but it just felt too obvious of a move to make his new love interest be his new roommate. And, of course, when Joey and his roommate end up dating, it doesn’t go well and they end up breaking up and she moves out, putting Joey, essentially, back at square one.

Luckily, things seem to be going well for Joey career-wise by the end of the season (and Rachel seems to still be temporarily living there) so hopefully he’ll be able to manage on his own for a bit.

Okay, back to Ross. Ross gets a job teaching at NYU (yay!) but then decides to date one of his students, Elizabeth (…). Ross is just…honestly, I roll my eyes constantly at this guy. I want to like him, I really do, and I want him and Rachel to end up together eventually (at least I think I do) but he just pains me sometimes. He keeps piping on about how mature his girlfriend is (she isn’t) but never realizes that maybe he’s just immature (he is). Luckily it doesn’t work out and honestly, for me, all that plot was good for was bringing in a very-attractive-Elizabeth’s Dad (Bruce Willis) to put Ross in his place (kind of). Ross is a handful.

Oh yeah, and he dates Rachel’s sister like twice. Just…graspin’ for straws at this point.

On a totally different note, I feel like not all that much happened with Phoebe this season. She was the cause of a few fights (saying she’d date Rachel over Monica) but was mostly a good friend (helping Chandler pick out a ring)…in her own Phoebe way (they have to trade for the ring Chandler really wants because Phoebe isn’t paying attention when the ring gets sold to a different man).

Of course, the final episodes of the season lead up to Monica and Chandler’s engagement. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not crazy about Monica. Those Geller siblings really grind my gears…but Chandler has given me a new love for Monica (also I love her hair this season…am I terrible for admitting it makes me like her more). If he can love her then so can I. 

But things aren’t so simple…pesky Richard comes back into the picture and nearly ruins everything for Monica and Chandler (just kidding, I’ve always loved Richard but still, I’m a ChanFan4life). Luckily, Richard is something of a push-over (/really really really good guy) and Chandler quickly dissuades him from intervening thus allowing Chandler and Monica to have their very sweet proposal in their very own apartment (which was adorned with like 300 candles…I mean seriously, did we learn nothing from the fire like 5 episodes ago). I will admit that I cried, even though it had to do with Monica. Chandler is still my favorite though…maybe I cried for him.

just kiddin, I cried cause I’m sappy and also how could you not cry.

So season 6 is in the books. I won’t even start season 7 until I write my midterm…I promise. Maybe.
